As Amsterdam and other cities work towards a sustainable future with electric vehicles (EVs), ensuring fair access to EV charging infrastructure remains a challenge. Energy justice is a framework that emphasises the fair and equitable distribution of energy resources, ensuring that everyone can benefit from clean energy advancements, regardless of their neighbourhood or income level. In the context of EV charging, this principle means that all communities—especially those historically underserved—should have access to charging stations, contributing to a more inclusive and fair energy system.

The current distribution of EV chargers often mirrors existing socio-economic divides. Wealthier neighbourhoods are more likely to have charging stations conveniently located, while lower-income communities may face limited access, forcing residents to travel further or wait longer for a charge. This unequal access can deepen societal divides, making it harder for all communities to participate in the shift to sustainable energy.

To address this, energy justice advocates for solutions that prioritise equity over market-driven placement alone. This involves designing EV infrastructure that takes into account diverse community needs and intentionally placing chargers in underserved areas.
